Genomic Tools in Applied Tree Breeding Programs: Factors to Consider

نویسندگان

چکیده

The past three decades have seen considerable research into the molecular genetics and genomics of forest trees, a variety new tools methods emerged that could practical applications in applied breeding programs. Applied breeders may lack specialized knowledge required to evaluate claims made about advantages over existing practices are faced with challenge deciding whether invest approaches or continue current practices. Researchers, on other hand, often experience constraints by programs not be well-equipped suitability method they developed particular program. Our goal here is outline social, biological, economic relevant inform researchers, summarize some how address those breeders. tropical species grown large areas relatively uniform climates rotations shorter than 10 years differ greatly from facing boreal deployed many different environments, each small areas, decades, so genomic likely appropriate.

Genomic Tools in Cowpea Breeding Programs: Status and Perspectives

Cowpea is one of the most important grain legumes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It provides strong support to the livelihood of small-scale farmers through its contributions to their nutritional security, income generation and soil fertility enhancement. Worldwide about 6.5 million metric tons of cowpea are produced annually on about 14.5 million hectares. The low productivity of cowpea is attri...

Genomic Tools in Pea Breeding Programs: Status and Perspectives

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is an annual cool-season legume and one of the oldest domesticated crops. Dry pea seeds contain 22-25% protein, complex starch and fiber constituents, and a rich array of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals which make them a valuable source for human consumption and livestock feed. Dry pea ranks third to common bean and chickpea as the most widely grown pulse in the wo...

QTL tools applied to forest breeding

Background In last decades, the progress of molecular techniques, bioinformatics tools and genome analysis equipment allowed genomes to be sequenced and analyzed for several plants. For Eucalyptus, the combination of quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping with genomic analyses, has allowed the identification and validation of a few genomic regions involved in growth and wood quality characters. ...

Congress of Genetics Applied to Livestock Production Genomic Selection in Sheep Breeding Programs

Implementation of genomic selection in sheep breeding provides a number of challenges, compared to dairy cattle, because of the higher genetic diversity between and within sheep breeds, the cost of maintaining reference populations and the limited ability of individual breeders to invest in genotyping. Within this study, we compare theoretical and realized genomic prediction accuracies for trai...

Application of Genomic Tools in Plant Breeding

Plant breeding has been very successful in developing improved varieties using conventional tools and methodologies. Nowadays, the availability of genomic tools and resources is leading to a new revolution of plant breeding, as they facilitate the study of the genotype and its relationship with the phenotype, in particular for complex traits. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies are al...
